HSE's
2002/3 report on "Offences and Penalties"
gives the most recent authoritative report on levels
of enforcement notices. The
main reported findings are:

The
number of enforcement notices has increased from
11,082 in 2001/02 to 13,263 in 2002/03 - a rise
of 20%. This increase coincided with a decrease
in the number of prosecutions by 21% |

The
number of improvement notices has increased from
6,712 in 2001/2 to 8,104 in 2002/3 - an increase
of 20% |

The
number of prohibition notices increased from 4,254
in 2001/2 to 5,159 in 2002/3 - an increase of
21% |

The
number of improvement notices issued in the Agriculture
sector increased from 429 in 2001/02 to 1,503
in 2002/03 - a rise of 250% |

In
2002/3 there were 14 crown improvement notices
and 1 crown Prohibition notice served on crown
bodies. This compared to 5 and 5 in 2001/2 |
